Research & Technology /
West Cumbria is home to a major concentration of research skills and facilities in nuclear and related technologies, with strong and growing potential for commercialisation into new markets.
West Cumbria is home to 36 per cent of Britain’s civil nuclear industry and almost half of the Country’s nuclear workforce.
It is also home to significant training facilities, such as the British Nuclear Fuels Group Technology Centre – which is at the core of the proposed National Nuclear Laboratory. The Centre is located at Sellafield and employs some 300 engineers and scientists.
Westlakes Science Park at Moor Row near Whitehaven is another hotbed for skills and research and innovation. Its close proximity to the ‘knowledge base’ of Sellafield means that it plays an important role in the existing and emerging research and supply chains and has many spin off benefits within the local economy.
Westlakes Science Park is one of many employment sites contained within the Britain’s Energy Coast™ Masterplan which can spread the benefits of this knowledge.
