Sellafield status at the world’s most complex nuclear site means that these skills and facilities will be needed locally, presenting many challenges and opportunities for existing and new firms.
However, the area’s expertise in decommissioning has resonance well beyond West Cumbria. Local businesses have the potential to tap into national and global markets, and bring in significant investment into the local economy.
At present Britain’s decommissioning programme stands at £80 billion while the global decommissioning market is worth some £300 billion. With demand in decommissioning services and transfer of knowledge set to grow, West Cumbria has the potential to ensure its knowledge is felt far and wide.
