New nuclear site nomination timetable /

No final decision has been made on possible sites and it’s important that members of the public and local communities know when and how to have their say.

The Government has set out how the nomination process will work. Site nominations must be submitted by 31st March 2009. The list of nominated sites will be published shortly after and members of the public then have a month to provide their initial comments.

The Government will then assess each site to decide if it meets a number of criteria. The sites assessed as suitable will be listed on the draft Nuclear National Policy Statement (NPS). Towards the end of 2009, the Government will invite members of the public to state their views on sites deemed to be strategically suitable and on the Nuclear NPS as a whole.

Following this, the list of sites will be finalised and developers may apply to the Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC) for planning permission. Before a developer applies for permission it has to consult affected Local Authorities and local communities.

The diagram below shows the next steps and when you can have your say.
