Port Investment programme /

Ports and marinas in West Cumbria will play a vital role in delivering both economic and social renaissance.

From 2008, £30 million will be ploughed into improving ports and marinas at Workington, Whitehaven, Maryport and Silloth in a variety of exciting projects.

While improvements to the Port of Workington is largely focussed on benefiting business, and in particular the nuclear decommissioning process; work elsewhere is geared towards improving both leisure facilities and providing much-needed variety in housing.

So far £17 million has been committed to a raft of improvements by West Lakes Renaissance, Cumbria County Council, Allerdale Borough Council, the European Regional Development Fund and Associated British Ports. A further £13 million is needed to ensure that West Cumbria makes the most of its superb coastal position – whether it is for the benefit of business, tourism, or leisure facilities for local people.

With a new 350-berth marina at The Waterfront Barrow-in-Furness, an important aim of the regeneration effort is to establish a chain of attractive marinas that will give yacht and boat tourists a fantastic reasons to come and visit the region.

The Port Investment Programme covers;

Port of Workington | Maryport Marina | Harrington Harbour | Whitehaven Harbour
