The vision for Britain’s Energy Coast™ is to establish a globally competitive cluster of businesses and enterprises within the energy and environment sectors.

The very foundation of the Britain’s Energy Coast™ Masterplan is maximising West Cumbria’s strengths in energy, environmental remediation, decommissioning and related manufacturing and engineering, to create a vibrant and diverse economy.

To achieve this, it is vital that new and existing businesses are given the right level of support to ensure that they benefit from the significant investment coming into the area – in particular the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s ten year, £43 billion programme.

Not only will this allow them to become more competitive in the nuclear market, it will also provide opportunities to transfer existing skills and knowledge into new areas of energy production, such as tidal and off-shore wind. Another crucial part of the Business & Enterprise support programme is to create an entrepreneurial culture that boasts high levels of business start ups.

Tourism also plays an important role in West Cumbria’s economy, which is why the Britain’s Energy Coast™ Masterplan seeks to improve the tourism offering in West Cumbria and at the same time increase the value of a sector that brings more than £1 billion into the county’s coffers each year.
